On March 4, Apple held its first big launch event of 2026 in New York, introducing a number of new devices, from the MacBook Neo to the focus of this piece: iPhone 17E. This is the tech giant’s latest midrange iPhone, designed as a more affordable alternative to the base iPhone 17.

There are many similarities between both the smartphones. Both run on Apple’s A19 chip, start with 256GB of storage, and even share the same form factor. They are also quite robust devices with an IP68 resistance rating. But key differences make them fundamentally different phones. You should buy the iPhone 17e if…
1. You want the best value iPhone
At $599, the iPhone 17e commands $200 less than the iPhone 17 while still offering the core iPhone experience. It has a high-quality OLED screen, Apple Intelligence features, and smooth performance courtesy of the A19 chip. For everyday tasks like texting, social media, and casual gaming, the 17e performs just as well as its more expensive sibling.

Also, it comes with 256GB of storage, which is double that of the iPhone 16e. In a way, you are getting 90% of the iPhone 17 experience. If you don’t care about the extra fuss and whistles and just want a phone that gets the job done, the iPhone 17e is the perfect choice.
2. You don’t have high demand for the camera
The iPhone 17e comes with a single 48MP Fusion camera, a feature Apple describes as having two cameras in one. It can activate a 2x telephoto effect for high-quality up-close shots. With only one lens to manage, it’s very easy to take good looking photos. You won’t feel needed or pressured to learn other camera options. You can shoot in 48MP for maximum detail or 24MP for smaller file sizes.
The 17e also supports Apple’s latest HDR software, which delivers rich midtone colors and deep shadows. Although it lacks an ultra-wide and long-zoom lens, the Fusion camera is good enough for social media, everyday snapshots, and familiar photos.
You should buy iPhone 17 if…
1. You want a better display
The iPhone 17 broke new ground upon launch and became the first base-model iPhone with a ProMotion display. The screen offers an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, making web scrolling, app navigation and animations feel noticeably faster and fluid.
Once you’ve experienced 120Hz, it’s hard to want anything else. Apple has not revealed what the refresh rate of the iPhone 17e is. However, we know it doesn’t support ProMotion, so I think it’s fair to say it’s not running at 120Hz; Maybe 60Hz.

Apart from the refresh rate, the iPhone 17e also has a larger 6.3-inch display, always-on functionality, and a maximum brightness of 3,000 nits. That higher brightness makes a big difference outside, improving visibility in direct sunlight. The 17e peaks at 1,200 nits. Overall, these screen components make the iPhone 17 feel closer to a pro-level phone.
2. You want more camera versatility
In addition to its 48MP Fusion main lens, the iPhone 17 includes a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. Having this additional lens makes the phone more suited for photography. For example, the ultra-wide camera is perfect for large landscape shots or large group photos where stepping back isn’t possible.
It lacks a dedicated telephoto option. That lens is reserved for the iPhone 17 Pro. However, it has an optical-quality 2x telephoto mode, like the iPhone 17e, so you can still capture high-quality up-close shots.
Whatever its shortcomings, that ultra-wide camera opens up more interesting photography opportunities on the iPhone 17. You can more easily experiment with different perspectives or capture more dynamic compositions. In most lighting conditions, the cameras on the Base 17 perform quite well. Yes, the 17e can produce excellent shots; It doesn’t have any message. But the iPhone 17 is still better overall and offers more flexibility.

Both these phones are fantastic. There is no question about it. But if I had to choose one, I would choose iPhone 17E. I’m not one to be interested in all the bells and whistles. I’m the type of user who isn’t going to try out every extra feature or camera lens on my mobile device.
I strongly prefer a straightforward smartphone that works flawlessly right out of the box. The iPhone 17e is that sweet spot for me. Its attractive design, solid performance, and capable camera are all available at a very reasonable price.
I value simplicity and reliability above everything else, so if I’m ever in the market for a new device, I’ll choose the iPhone 17e. That said, if you’re a shutterbug who wants a top-notch camera or a high-quality touchscreen, get the iPhone 17.
