I’ve covered a lot of solar generators here, and they’re all popular. I’ve tested dozens of devices over the years and have watched the technology continue to grow from strength to strength.
But I’m often asked, “What happens when the clouds roll in and the sun disappears?” Living in the UK, sun can be in short supply for much of the year.

This is what happens when you turn your attention from solar energy to wind energy. And there’s a company that makes portable wind turbines to charge your smartphones, tablets, and other portable devices: shine turbine,
I’ve been testing the model for the past year, and while it doesn’t effectively replace my various Jackery, Ecovacs, and Anker portable solar chargers, it has opened my eyes to a new type of power source. Here’s what you need to know before you buy it.

The Shine Turbine Kit comes with everything you need – the turbine, a stand, guy lines, pegs, and cables. It took a little longer than I expected to set up the first few times, especially if you’re trying to do it while a thunderstorm is blowing. But like most things, it gets easier with practice.

There’s also a knack to effectively setting up the main line, which took me a while to figure out – a process that would have been much faster had I read the manual – as I found the setup completely unstable the first few times. But once you figure it out, it’s very strong.
Once set up, this is one sturdy kit!

Once set up, you have options. You can let the turbine charge the internal battery and then use it to charge your devices, or you can add a power bank to the turbine. Your choice depends on how you’re using the setup.
Using the entire turbine as one large power bank makes sense for the odd top-up on the go, but in a base camp setting, it is better to charge and use separate power banks, keeping the reserve in the turbine for backup on stationary days.
Limitations of Wind Energy
I’ve found Shine Turbine to be quite effective, but it does have some drawbacks. First, 40-watt output is a small amount of power if you typically have 100- or 200-watt solar panels.
Instead, the Shine Turbine is ideal for smartphones, tablets, drones, and cameras. For laptops and other larger devices, I’d want to use something more powerful like Lightning.

Setup also takes a lot of time. I have been able to throw up solar panels for my power stations in seconds. There are some that you can just put in your backyard or porch and forget they exist.
The best setup time I found for the Shine Turbine was about ten minutes. Additionally, taking down the turbine involves carefully packing away the man lines so that the next setup will not be painful.
But despite the downsides, the Shine Turbine is a great way to get power from nature when you’re away from an AC outlet.
ZDNET’s shopping advice
If you need electricity and can’t rely on the sun, shine turbine Really shines. Yes, it’s weighty, yes, setup takes a while, and yes, it has limited power output, but I’ve used a single turbine to keep my iPhone and a drone powered on a multi-day trip where a power station and solar panels weren’t an option.
