Firefox is adding a switch to turn off AI features

Unlike many companies that stuff AI into their browsers, Mozilla will soon give you a way to turn off all these features. One Update coming on 24th February Will add a new “AI Controls” option to Firefox’s Settings menu, letting you disable or enable individual AI features of the browser, including access to the built-in AI chatbot, translation, AI tab group suggestions, and more.

In December, Enzor-DeMeo promised an AI “kill switch” in response to users unhappy with Firefox’s adoption of AI. “Choice matters and demonstrating our commitment to choice is how we build and maintain trust,” Enzore-Dimeo. wrote at that time. Now that the switch is on, and it includes the option to disable all current and upcoming AI features. You can also manage whether Firefox uses AI to generate alt text for images in PDFs or to generate key points in link previews.

“AI is changing the web, and people want very different things from it,” Ajit Verma, Firefox’s vice president of product, wrote in the announcement. “We’ve heard from many people who want nothing to do with AI. We’ve also heard from others who want AI tools that are actually useful. Our continued commitment to listening to our community as well as providing alternatives is what led us to create AI Control.”
