It’s not exactly big news that big tech is deeply intertwined with the US government. Days after Trump’s inauguration last year, officials including OpenAI’s Sam Altman gathered in the oval office To announce a $500 billion AI infrastructure project – and they did remained a sycophant since.
Now that stubbornness may come back to haunt them. As reported by MIT Technology ReviewActivists critical of the actions of the Trump administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have launched a campaign called QuitGPT, urging regular users to leave OpenAI’s chatbot forever.
So far, the campaign has attracted more than 700,000 supporters of the boycott. The QuitGPT website lists a few different ways to participate: quitting ChatGPT entirely, canceling paid memberships, and spreading the word about the boycott with others on social media.
As to why, the activists behind the boycott point to OpenAI’s incredibly tight relationship with the Trump administration. As QuietGPT notes, OpenAI President Greg Brockman is famously Donated 25 million dollars For a Trump super PAC in 2025, while ICE uses an AI tool Powered by Chatgpt For recruitment.
“They are cozying up to Trump while ICE is killing Americans and the Justice Department is trying to hijack the election,” QuitGPT organizers write on their website. “ChatGPT enables mental-health crisis through sycophancy and dependency by replacing human relationships with AI girlfriends/boyfriends. Many employees have left OpenAI due to the lies, deception, and negligence of its leadership.”
For freelance software developer Alfred Stephen, it was Brockman’s donation to Trump’s political action committee that inspired him to join the boycott.
“That’s really the straw that broke the camel’s back,” Stephen said. technical review. When they canceled their $20 per month subscription, a customer feedback survey came up asking what OpenAI could do to retain their business. “Do not support the fascist regime,” he wrote.
