Baldur's Gate 3 studio says it won't use AI for concept art or writing

After some controversy, the developers baldur’s gate 3 Creator Larian Studios has further explained its use of generator AI. CEO Sven Vincke and other Larian developers held an AMA on Reddit where they answered users’ questions about the team’s next title, divinityHe also asked questions related to reports that the studio was using generative AI in its development process,

“So first of all – there will be no GenAI art in Divinity,” Vincke wrote In response to a question on Reddit. last month, in an interview with bloombergVinke said that although they were not using AI-generated assets divinityThe team was experimenting with AI tools to “explore ideas, improve PowerPoint presentations, develop concept art, and write placeholder text.”

His comments were immediately and fiercely criticized by gamers, developers, and former Larian employees online. In reply, Vinke issued a statement Clarifying that they were not using the tool to generate concept art, but rather that certain artists could use it to rapidly iterate on ideas.

Now, in a Reddit AMA, he says he won’t be using it for concept art at all. “We have decided to refrain from using GenAI tools during concept art development,” they wrote. “Thus there can be no discussion about the origins of art.” But Vinke left room for the potential use of general AI assets in the future.

“If we use a GenAI model to create in-game assets, it will be trained on the data we already have,” he wrote.

In addition to the art, Larian also explained the use of General AI with the text. “We have no textual generation touching our dialogues, journal entries or other writings in Divinity,” Writing director Adam Smith wroteHe stated that the text generation was only for research, not development purposes, and that the results were of very low quality compared to the human author and Larian’s own standards,

“We had a limited group experiment with the tools to generate text, but the results came in at 3/10,” Smith wrote. “Even my worst first draft… is at least a 4/10… and the amount of iteration required to get even individual lines to the quality we want is enormous.”

While these comments may reassure players that at least General AI assets will not be in the final product, Vincke again confirmed that General AI will still play some role in Larian.

“Our hope is that this can help us refine ideas faster, leading to a more focused development cycle, less waste, and ultimately a higher quality game.”
