Databricks Lakebase now generally available

Databricks has made Lakebase, its serverless managed Postgres service, generally available – a move aimed at the operational databases that power live applications and, increasingly, AI agents. Lakebase is positioned as a new category of operational database that separates compute from storage, a design intended to remove some long-standing pain points of traditional databases.

Most developers are familiar with the hidden costs of conventional databases that tie compute and storage together. Because every query competes for the same fixed CPU and memory, a single heavy query can affect all live operations, which makes working against production data risky and pushes teams to build custom infrastructure instead of building features. As applications become more automated and systems act on data in real time, that shared, fragile setup becomes an even bigger liability. Starting today, Lakebase is available in beta for production workloads in select AWS regions and on Azure in select regions. We’re rapidly expanding GA to Azure over the next few months and to Google Cloud later this year. Compliance certifications including SOC2 and HIPAA are also on the roadmap for early this year.
