Serhiy “Flash” Beskrestnov is, at least unofficially, a spy. Once a month, he drives to the frontlines in a VW van equipped with equipment that monitors radio hardware, roof antennas and drones. For several days, he searches the skies for broadcasts that might help Ukrainian troops.

Drones define this brutal conflict, and most rely on the radio communications with which the Flash has been obsessed since childhood. Although now a civilian, the former officer has taken upon himself the responsibility of informing his country’s defense on all matters relating to radio.

Unlike traditional spies, Flash shares his discoveries with more than 127,000 followers, including soldiers and officers, on social media. His work won fans in the army, but also caused controversy among top officers. Read the full story.
