Chatbots are adept at producing sophisticated dialogues and imitating empathetic behavior. They never get tired of chatting. So then, it’s no surprise that many people now use them for companionship—to form friendships or even romantic relationships.

According to a study by the nonprofit Common Sense Media, 72% of American teens have used AI for companionship. But while chatbots can provide much-needed emotional support and guidance for some people, they can exacerbate underlying problems in others – particularly vulnerable people or those with mental health problems.
