Gemini is not replacing Google Assistant on Android yet

Google isn’t quite ready to replace the Assistant with Gemini on Android devices. The company said on Friday That it will continue its work to help users upgrade to Gemini on mobile devices in 2026 instead of its original plan to switch by the end of 2025.

“We are adjusting our previously announced timeline to ensure we provide a seamless transition,” Google says. Once the move away from Google Assistant is complete, users will no longer be able to access the voice assistant on devices that meet the minimum requirements to run Gemini. Users will also not be able to download the Google Assistant app.

This year, Google moved towards replacing the Assistant on Android with Gemini, giving users the ability to initiate phone calls, set timers, and send messages through Gemini without turning on Gemini Apps Activity. This change allows people to use Gemini’s assistant-like capabilities while opting out of their conversations that are used for AI training.
