As I walked through the halls of MWC Barcelona this week, google pixel 10a Was sitting comfortably in my jeans.
The $499 handset isn’t as powerful, capable, or expensive as other phones on the show floor, but it’s one of the few options I can confidently recommend — and one of the even fewer options that can fit in my denim pocket without making me feel embarrassed.

Like last year’s Pixel 9a, the Pixel 10a is Google’s safest (and best) bet to please customers in the midrange market. From the design to the camera setup and processor, the Pixel 10a is, for the most part, the same phone. But Google has made some small changes that make the sum of the parts of the Pixel 10a in 2026 even more meaningful.
Design: Find the Difference
This is debatable, but for me, the biggest change in design this year is a completely flush camera. Although no one has really complained about the degree of camera bulge on the Pixel 9a, the complete lack of it on the Pixel 10a makes it look more beautiful than any other device I’ve used recently.
(This is also a big design flex by Google, and I’d really like to see it take a similar approach with its flagship series, expected later this year.)

Google has improved the Pixel 10a’s display, increasing its peak brightness to 3,000 nits (from 2,700). Again, a small change on paper that is more noticeable during real-world use. Barcelona has been generous with sunshine and the occasional overcast over the past few days, but I’m still able to walk the diamond-shaped streets and chaotic paths without glancing at my phone.

That said, Google’s brightness slider still feels unbalanced. Compared to Samsung devices and iPhones, I find myself hovering the brightness slider between the 75% and 100% levels during the day.
On the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra in my other pocket, which has a lower peak brightness of 2,600 nits, I’m comfortable at about 60%. To be clear, it all depends on the sensitivity Google sets, so I’m not knocking the actual display technology. I am literally choosing lies.

I’ll thank Google for the lack of Qi2 wireless charging — or, more specifically, the magnetic adapters that make up the rest of the Pixel 10 series feature the PixelSnap. This is clearly a fan-favorite feature among Pixel superfans and, more importantly, it’s a feature that could potentially attract iPhone users to Android. (Funnily enough, poppy berry is second on my list of reasons to switch colors. I digress.)
Frankly, it’s important that Google positions the Pixel 10a as firmly as possible as the leading midrange option on the market, with the new iPhone 17e arriving to compete in the same space. And what’s one of the best new features on the iPhone? MagSafe support.
Performance: In this memory economy?
Not only Google, but every consumer electronics release this year will be based on the background of “Ramageddon”, because of the AI boom and its ever-increasing demand for high-bandwidth memory, resulting in shortages and rising prices.
Too: Google Pixel 10a vs Pixel 9a: How much of an upgrade is the new affordable phone?
Maybe that’s partly why Google, like Apple and the iPhone 17e, stuck to the same design and memory configuration as last year’s phones. The cost savings are reasonable. I was just hoping for something more refreshing.
While a few years ago the Pixel 10a’s Tensor G4 chip, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of base storage might have been suitable for a capable phone, the higher demands of today’s users – including increased use of on-device and multimodal AI features, as well as content capturing – prove that you can no longer settle for “good enough.” Not when Google is advertising the phone with its seven-year commitment to software and security updates.
For example, Gemini Live encountered some struggles during my MWC visit, such as preparing a response before I even asked a question, or not responding at all. In one instance, the live camera feed paused as an Uber ride was being tracked in the background. I partly blame my poor eSIM connection in Barcelona for this, so now that I’m back in New York I’ll give the Pixel 10a another chance.

On a bright note, the Pixel 10a’s 5,100mAh battery lasted well during a week of intense multitasking, lasting long enough to charge after my dinner. The improved 30W wired charging rate won’t set any records, but it’s a worthwhile step up from last year’s 23W speed.
Camera: It’s all about the software
The Pixel 10a has the same camera hardware as the Pixel 9a, meaning it has a 48MP wide lens and a 13MP ultrawide lens on the back, and a 13MP sensor on the front. Like last year, the Pixel camera delivers color accuracy and contrast balance in a variety of lighting conditions. Compared to competing phones like the Samsung Galaxy A56 5G, I found the Pixel 10a’s output leaned toward cooler tones, which I like.

How the Pixel 10a camera experience really differentiates itself year after year is through the AI assistance of Auto Best Tech and Camera Coach, two guidance features that have been carried over from the more expensive Pixel 10 models. The first analyzes repeatedly taken shots and compiles the one with the best expressions, such as a group photo in which everyone is smiling and without blinking. Camera Coach gives you tips for framing your shots based on the subject.

My experience with both AI features has been positive, and I can see them being trusted by family and friends who feel unsure about their camera skills, but are willing to learn.
ZDNET’s shopping advice
What I mean to say is that google pixel 10a The company’s series of value-driven phones continues with smart and meaningful upgrades. Although I wish Google were more ambitious with the Pixel 10a’s display specifications to meet the growing demands of today’s users and increased ownership time, the device should still do well for most people.

Specifically, the $499 Pixel 10a configuration offers 128GB of storage. If that is not enough, you will have to buy the 256GB variant, which is priced at $599, which is the same as. iPhone 17E. I’ll have to test the iPhone to see which one is really better at that price, but for now, if you’re steadfast on Team Android the choice is clear.
