Shortly before 10:30 a.m. ET, problems were reported bounced on downdetectorA popular site for tracking outages. When I tried the browser version myself, I got an error, “Connection timed out, error code 522.” The app version loaded, but no new content would load. By 11:10 a.m. ET, the site would load, but when I tried to log in I got an error message that read, “Oops, something went wrong. Please try again later”.
A downdetector map More than 180,000 problems were reported throughout the United States. It comes in a few days another hurdle This took the social media site offline for many people. (Disclosure: DownDetector is owned by Ziff Davis, parent company of ZDNET.)
downdetector also showed Surge in reports of Cloudflare outages at the same time, together grokAnd AWSBut this issue seems to be mostly limited to X.
A cloudflare system status page Explains that scheduled maintenance is currently in progress.
This isn’t Cloudflare’s only outage recently. In November, a massive outage took down large parts of the web. Last year’s attack was not malicious, and there is nothing yet to indicate that this issue is malicious.
The specific error page that many users are seeing is the Cloudflare error page, but it says that Cloudflare is operating normally and the problem is with the host – in this case, x.com.
As of 10:55 a.m. ET, the Cloudflare status site updated to read, “Identified – Cloudflare has identified an increased level of errors for customers running worker scripts in Newark and Atlanta.” As of 11:06 a.m., the status read, “A fix has been implemented and we are monitoring the results.”
I have contacted X for more information.
This is a developing story.
