OpenAI’s first hardware release will be a smart speaker with a camera that will likely cost between $200 and $300, according to Information. The device will be able to recognize things like “objects on nearby tables or conversations of people nearby.” Information Say, and it will have a facial recognition system like Face ID so that people can buy things.
OpenAI acquired Jony Ive’s hardware company last May in a deal worth about $6.5 billion. Details about their hardware products have since been emerging, including that the first device will not be a wearable and will not be released to customers before March 2027. Other hardware companies are also making a big push into AI gadgets — including Apple, Ive’s former employer, which is reportedly creating its own smart glasses, an AI-powered pendant, and AirPods with cameras.
In addition to smart speakers, OpenAI is “possibly” working on smart glasses and a smart lamp, Information Report. (Apple may also be working on a smart lamp.) But OpenAI glasses may not be mass produced until 2028, and while OpenAI has created prototypes of smart lamp-like gadgets, Information says it is “unclear” whether they will be released and that OpenAI’s device plans are in the early stages.
