Samsung’s February Unpacked 2026 event gave us a new trio of flagship phones, the most premium of which is the Galaxy S26 Ultra. On the other side of the coin, Apple’s best phone, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, is $100 cheaper, and that has its pros and cons, but they’re both really exceptional.
You might be wondering which one to buy. The easy answer is, “Stick with whatever OS you have right now,” but in all honesty, both phones are good enough to justify a switch. If you’re going to go, go big! It doesn’t get much bigger than these two powerhouses, so let’s dig deeper and see who the winner is.

As it happens, I have an iPhone 17 Pro Max, and also the latest Android phone, and it’s no more “latest” than the S26 Ultra, so these opinions are based on prior experience with the S25 Ultra, a good amount of hands-on experience with the S26 Ultra, and the specs we have.
You should buy iPhone 17 Pro Max if…
1. You (or your family) are in the Apple ecosystem
Platform lock-in is a thing, and Apple has it better than most. Apple offers an entire ecosystem of devices and cross-device functionality that most other OEMs can’t match. It’s not that Samsung doesn’t have its own ecosystem, but Apple’s devices are designed to work together from the beginning. They’re at a level of detail that other ecosystems, including Samsung, can’t really compete with.

Then, there’s the 800-pound gorilla in the room. If your family is also in the Apple ecosystem, there’s even more reason to stay there. One of the reasons I carry an iPhone everywhere is so my kids have iPhones, too. “Dad, can you ring my phone?” This is a common refrain in my house. Add to that iMessage and parental controls, and there are enough obstacles to make not carrying an iPhone a huge headache.
There are software workarounds for almost everything an iPhone enables with other devices, but they are just that – workarounds. If you want to join the Apple ecosystem, there’s only one category of phones you can go with.
2. You want a phone that just works
It’s a cliché, but it exists for a reason. Apple has a long history of being late to the party with a lot of features, but usually when they do get a feature, it’s pretty sophisticated. Apple doesn’t take steps by halves and it rarely (though never never) treats its users like beta testers. It will understand the landscape, identify a feature that people love, and make it significantly better than the competition.

This philosophy also extends to apps built for the platform. Apple maintains high standards when it comes to its App Store and approvals. I regularly encounter the same app on both platforms that works flawlessly the first time on the iPhone, but struggles on Android phones. A lot goes into app development, especially on a platform like Android which can have multiple versions and flavors, so there are no shades. Apple offers a better and more consistent experience.
3. You are a video shooter
There are several reasons why the iPhone 17 Pro Max is the phone to go for video. First and foremost, is storage. Simply put, the iPhone can get up to 2TB of onboard storage; The maximum capacity of the S26 Ultra is 1TB. One terabyte of storage sounds like a lot – and it is, but if you’re shooting a lot of 8K or even 4K video, it’ll drain your storage quickly. This is also a solid argument if you’re a hardcore gamer, as they take up a lot of space these days.

The iPhone also offers a really great video experience. From shooting in dedicated ProRes RAW mode to open gate shooting, if you’re a filmmaker, you want options, and the iPhone gives you plenty. The App Store also has a number of apps that you can use to capture, enhance, and edit your videos.
Sure, there are apps in the Play Store for Android, but this combination of tools built for filmmakers makes the iPhone 17 Pro Max the perfect phone for video enthusiasts.
You should buy the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra if…
1. You want raw power
As recently as two years ago, this title belonged to the iPhone category. But things changed after Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor for the Galaxy. Of course, we’re talking about raw numbers here – user experience and vertical integration go a long way in Apple’s favor, but Qualcomm’s processors have started to outperform Apple’s on benchmarking apps, and that’s a big deal.

Processing power is important in the fields of video processing/editing, gaming, and AI. If these are important categories for you, Samsung has the best game in town. The iPhone is a powerful machine, make no mistake, but the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is currently the most powerful phone you can buy right now.
2. You are completely dependent on AI
Unfortunately, Apple Intelligence has now seen a few false starts. Meanwhile, Samsung and Google keep releasing AI-powered features one after the other. This generation of Samsung phones is no exception, with the Galaxy AI making most of the headlines from this lineup of S26 smartphones. From editing images to the new Now Nudge feature, AI is present in this software release.

One particularly interesting new feature for Gemini is the ability to summon an Uber with an order. Simply tell Gemini where you want to go, and it’ll launch Uber, input the destination, and once you confirm it’ll call the car. This is potentially the first of countless apps and services that can be further automated with AI.
3. You value your privacy
Apple has always prided itself as a privacy-first company, and rightfully so. But Samsung is moving forward with Privacy Screen, a hardware/software combination that could potentially change the way people think about their phones and privacy. Samsung has redesigned its screens to feature wide and narrow angle pixels, which the company can turn off individually to obscure the screen via software.

Not only does it prevent the looky-loos sitting in the airplane seat next to you from reading your texts, but because it’s software driven, you can selectively block specific elements on your screen. So your entire screen is bright and beautiful, but a notification comes in and only blocks the area where it is visible.
author’s choice
Both of these phones are absolutely fantastic – there’s no doubt about that. But at the end of the day, if I had to choose, I’d go with this Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. I have a dual-use phone lifestyle, but when I value it iPhone 17 Pro Max For its stability and its comfort, Samsung and Android in general have a wide variety of fun form factors to play with, and that includes a number of accessories you can buy.

Apple does a great job within its ecosystem, and that’s fine with everyone else. Android works very well with almost everything from Windows PCs to a variety of smartwatches and Bluetooth accessories. Everything an iPhone can connect to, an Android phone can connect to even more. Also, I won’t even talk about the stylus here, because although I’m not a huge stylus person, I definitely believe in the “it’s better to have it and not need it” philosophy.
Of course, as I mentioned before, I have both. But ultimately I’m on Team Android, where I feel there is more freedom.
