Spotify launched a new Prompted Playlist feature on Thursday that allows users to describe the type of playlist they want to listen to, including sentiments, pop culture references, emotions and more, using natural language. According to Spotify, playlist generation also takes into account your listening history and current music trends to move away from automation and toward collaboration.

The feature originally launched in beta in New Zealand in December 2025 and is now rolling out to Premium listeners in beta across the US and Canada by the end of January. Keep reading below to know how to access it and how it worked for me.
my experience
Inspired playlists should not be confused with Spotify’s existing AI playlists; It aims to go one step further than that, as it not only creates the playlist for you but also keeps it updated and takes into account your listening history. Another unique feature is that you can choose whether to refresh the playlist daily, weekly, or not at all. You can also choose the day of the week it will refresh.
It’s fun to use and as simple as described. I tested it at my friend’s birthday party – a perfect occasion, since I was on aux. After contributing to my friend’s playlist, I knew what vibe I was going for and used that for the prompt.

My prompt was: Can you make a playlist for my best friend who is turning 25 for his birthday party. Vibes are songs we all know and can dance to, but it doesn’t have to be EDM. Some inspirations are Sabrina Carpenter, Tate McRae and Charli XCX.
In a matter of seconds, Spotify created a playlist with a cover, title, and description that met my prompt criteria well. Many of the songs on this playlist were already in the playlist my friends and I originally created.
In practice, I found it to be very similar to the Spotify ChatGPT integration, which lets you describe how you want your playlist to look. However, again, the ChatGPT integration lacks the aforementioned updates and personalization options that would, in theory, take curation a step further.

Do I think it will replace the human playlist curating experience? No, because music is very personal. Even though the prompted playlist understands and pulls your listening history, it still can’t know the memories or emotions you associate with each song. That said, I think it’s a really useful starting point for inspiration, or perhaps if you’re in a hurry and don’t want to take a chance on a completely random playlist.
try it yourself
Once you get access to the feature, all you need to do is tap on the (+) at the bottom right of the Spotify app and select the prompted playlist. You can then describe what you want to hear and click Generate. If you don’t know where to start, it gives you prompts that you can copy and paste.
