CES this year is full of AI companions and assistant robots, but Luna’s DeskMate is a clever take on the idea: It’s a desktop charging hub, with three USB-C ports, one USB-A, and a MagSafe pad, that automatically activates the AI companion app when you connect your iPhone to a wireless charger.
The unique thing about DeskMate is that it takes advantage of the technology you already have, using your phone. It doesn’t need its own display, camera, or microphone, because the iPhone provides them (and it’s only for the iPhone right now). By also providing charging, it can replace the charger you already have on your desk rather than adding to the clutter.
The stand rotates and tilts, allowing the deskmate to look at you while you talk to him. It has beautiful, Pixar-like eyes, but it still has practical features like Slack integration and meeting assistance.
DeskMate is expected to launch a crowdfunding campaign in March, but my big hesitation is the price. There’s no final figure yet, but the company told me it’ll be “under $300,” which is a lot for a device that’s already on your phone.
