ChatGPT will soon start showing you sponsored products or services if they are relevant to your conversation. in one announcement on fridayOpenAI says it will begin testing ads in the coming weeks to logged-in users in the US who use the app for free or have a ChatGPAT Go subscription.
“Clearly labeled” ads will appear in a separate area at the bottom of your chats. OpenAI says it will “keep your interactions with ChatGPT private from advertisers”, adding that it will “never sell your data” to them. Advertisers also won’t influence the answers you see, which will be “customized based on what’s most useful to you,” according to OpenAI.
If you’re signed up to a ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Enterprise plan, you won’t see ads. The less expensive $8/month ChatGPT Go plan is expanding to the US today, but it will also include ads. OpenAI says you can turn off personalization, clear data used for ads, dismiss and respond to ads. Users under the age of 18 (or OpenAI estimates that users are under the age of 18) will not see ads, and they will not appear near “sensitive or regulated topics” related to health, mental health, or politics.
OpenAI has been hinting at ads for some time, with ChatGPT head Nick Turley saying during an interview that an integration would be “very thoughtful and interesting.” decoder in August. The company later experimented with app promotions in December, but rolled back the change after some users expressed disappointment over the update. OpenAI says it is now launching advertising “so more people can benefit from our tools with lower usage limits.”
