5 Generalization Techniques: Why Standardizing Activations Transforms Deep Learning
Deep neural networks are difficult to train. Add more layers, and training becomes unstable – gradients explode or disappear, learning becomes slow, or the model fails to converge.

This article explores five normalization techniques necessary to stabilize the training of deep learning models: batch normalization, layer normalization, instance normalization, group normalization, and RMS normalization. Each method uniquely addresses the challenges posed by intrinsic covariance variation and shows how their implementation enhances model performance across a variety of tasks, from computer vision to natural language processing, making deep networks more reliable and efficient.
