China’s Alibaba released an open source AI model called RynnBrain that is designed to power robots, enabling them to perform a variety of tasks.
The tech and e-commerce giant made the model available on February 10 on GitHub and via its DAMO Academy research initiative. hugging faceWhere he also told about his abilities.
Describing RinBrain as “an embodied base model based on physical reality”, the team behind the technology said in a statement that it went beyond “passive observation” to execute complex tasks using physics-aware logic.
The accompanying video shows what he means by this. Titled as RynnBrain’s Housework Diary clips over three minutes A robot is depicted performing various household tasks on request.
These included arranging tableware around the sink, following specific instructions about what goes where, and identifying three oranges from a fruit selection and placing them in a bowl. The robot also took out a bottle of milk from the fridge before placing several items in the dirty front room.
While the tasks may seem relatively simple to the human eye, they require ReinBrain-powered bots to master many different skills, including counting, spatial awareness, and episodic memory to identify objects, target areas, and motion trajectories.
According to Alibaba, this could have significant consequences for how humans use bots and interact with them in the future. “When robots have a brain, they’re no longer just tools, they think one step ahead of you,” the video’s caption says.
RynnBrain was trained on Alibaba’s Qwen3-VL vision-language model, and, like the vendor’s other models, its availability in multiple versions on GitHub and Hugging Face means developers can use it for free.
This has been a strategic strategy of Alibaba as it attempts to expand the use of its models.
