Employees aren’t hesitant to push back against AI in the workplace.
In a glaring disconnect, bosses are often concerned about technique, while their subordinates are more aware that this often sparks under-confident work that upon closer inspection is full of subtle errors that need to be manually corrected. This divide was on full display when the mayor of Vancouver acknowledged widespread AI use to the public this week, Per canadian press.
Earlier this week, Mayor Ken Sim attended a press conference As part of the unveiling of two AI data centers coming up in the city. Slipping his tongue, Sim said he had “11 AI agents running” doing “a lot of” his work in the background. His comments were meet immediately with criticism, As noted daily hive – some of which came from other local politicians. Clearly, the implication that mayors could hand over city-related duties to AI is not sitting well with locals. Now, Sim is attempting to take back what he said, going so far as to issue a public statement.
“Any AI agents or tools I’ve experimented with were used solely in a personal capacity,” Sim explained. “At no point were these devices used to make city decisions, access confidential information, or conduct municipal business.”
He went so far as to call the entire incident “misinformation,” which is confusing, since those were his own words.
One thing is certain: Research has already found that AI has the potential to speed up workloads, which is a far cry from the supercharged efficiency that AI developers are promising and bosses are boasting. As a boss, Sim was probably surprised by how aware the public was of those shortcomings.
After all, he said this at a press conference for new AI data centers – so chances are he’s drinking the Kool-Aid.
