Last Wednesday morning, I woke up and did what I usually do when I open my eyes. I picked up my phone and checked my Oura app to see how I slept. However, this morning, Ora’s home page looked a little different.
Unlike the sleep and readiness scores that I usually see on the home page, a new message appeared at the top. While none of the biomarkers deviated too much from my baseline, Ora’s symptom radar feature warned me that my biometrics indicated “major signs of stress.” This encouraged me to take it easy – considering I was heading to the office for the weekday, this was a big task.

That morning, I felt normal and healthy. I was convinced that Ora had made an algorithmic error. Erring on the side of caution, I spent the workday already drinking bottle after bottle of water.
where things went wrong
The next day, I woke up and saw that my aura ring symptom radar indicator was back on and there was no sign of stress, despite the fact that I now had a scratch on my neck – no big deal, just a tickle. During the workday, I could feel myself becoming more and more tired, and by the end of the day, I was curled up in my bed, shivering from the cold under layers of sheets and blankets.
My temperature was 100.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Defeated, I texted my roommates, “I’m afraid Ora Ring was right.”

Health trackers like Aura Rings and smart watches or smart rings are becoming so efficient in health monitoring that they can detect changes in the body earlier. The devices are worn close to the body around the clock and record the user’s heart rate, respiratory rate, skin temperature, oxygen saturation and more.
So when deviations from the baseline occur during sleep or workout, these devices can immediately detect them and notify the user. This disease-detection system has resulted in some miracle stories over the years.

Ora ring identified Changes in a nurse practitioner’s body Which ultimately led to the diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma. Many users reporting their experiences on Oura Ring Reddit have also found pregnancy detection to be early. It also encouraged a user to check with their general practitioner due to their constant stress extremes and heart palpitations. Because of that appointment a Autoimmune disease diagnosis.
The next morning, when I woke up the symptom radar again blared major symptoms of stress, this time telling me that my body temperature was out of range. The next day, it was discovered that my body temperature, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and respiratory rate were all dysregulated.

For the next few days, I spent my waking hours (few and far between) lying on my bed, drinking cough syrup and Gatorade, eating bowls of minestrone soup, and swallowing extra-strength ibuprofen. Every morning, I would wake up and check the Ora app to see if my biometrics were improving.
I don’t pay much attention to my sleep scores or heart rate metrics on an average day, but as I’ve used the Aura Ring over the years, I keep a close eye on them when I get sick. I’ve found it helpful to track the progression of my disease through biomarkers like resting heart rate, which increases when you’re sick and decreases when you’re well.
The Oura app makes this easy by offering this important data in daily and historical views. You can track your body temperature or HRV over time and see how your illness (or health) affects these trends.
moving forward
A look at Oura Ring Reddit proves that the symptom radar is working on many other Oura Ring users too, as we’re in the midst of nasty cold and flu season.

While the Oura Ring helped detect the disease, a quick visit to the doctor at the onset of symptoms, the flu vaccine, and medication resulted in a quick recovery. Wearable technology can be a good predictor of disease, but it can’t prevent it – nor stop its spread.
However, this technology can identify early signs of the disease. This can help users continuously track biometrics that they could not track with the same regularity and accuracy previously.
